Jimmy looked into his rear-view mirror and sighed quietly. The radio had been turned off hours ago after his girls fell asleep. The rain was the only sound he could hear other than their quiet breathing. Though he knew that the floor in the back was covered in empty coffee cups and restaurant food bags that shifted as he drove along.
He looked ahead then hoping to see a small town...anywhere he could turn off the road. Jimmy just needed a hotel where he and his daughters could rest for the night...and in the morning he could see about getting their car fixed. The car had been making funny noise's for a while now. At this point he just hoped he didn't break down as his cell phone would die before getting a call made.
The sign for Eden River, Wisconsin passed and he sighed finally a city was near. He pulled onto the off ramp and nearly screamed when the car sputtered twice and died. He was barely able to get to the shoulder before it died horrifically.
Jimmy stepped out of the car after making sure his little girls were still sleeping peacefully. He popped the hood only to find smoke billowing out of it into the evening sky around him. There was no way that he would be able to walk to the town from here not with his girls.
He looked back toward the highway hoping to see lights turning off onto the ramp and found nothing but passing cars. Jimmy put the car in neutral and started trying to push the car. He got it started going but it was hard trying to steer it down the somewhat sloped off ramp.
When a horn honked behind him he nearly turned around and flipped the person off. Instead he stopped the car when he realized that the car responsible had pulled up behind him on the shoulder. Jimmy was surprised to see the old car...it was a classic from he would say the late sixties, but in great shape for being that old.
Jimmy quickly looked into the back seat to check on the girls to find two pairs of sleepy blue eyes looking back at him. He motioned for them to stay where they were and looked up to find the driver of the other car stepping out of his vehicle. The man was wearing blue jeans and a leather jacket, the setting sun gave just enough light to make out his light brown hair.
The stranger walked up to just about the back of Jimmy's car and then looked back for a moment at his own vehicle.
“Hey man, anything I can do to help?” he asked
“I don't actually know what's wrong with it...it started making this awful sound and then when we pulled onto the off ramp it just sputtered and died. I was barely able to get it onto the shoulder. I was just trying to get to the little town up here,” Jimmy told the man
“Let me take a look I work on cars some in my free time maybe I can figure out what's up with it,” he said
“If you'd be willing?” Jimmy asked
The man moved to look under the hood and pulled out a cell phone which he lit it seemed for the light. He looked over it for a moment and then sighed before he walked back over to Jimmy.
“So it looks like there's a hole in one of the hoses and it caused the engine to over heat. It's not all that hard to fix but in the dark its near impossible.”
“Well damn that's just my luck lately,” Jimmy said wondering what he was gonna do now with the girls...them sleeping in the car in the middle of nowhere for the night didn't seem like the best idea.
“Look I run the local Bed and Breakfast...I can drive you into town and you can stay at my place tonight. Tomorrow I can bring you back out to get the car and we'll tow it back to town and get it fixed for you. Then you can get back to heading where ever you are heading,” the man offered
“I appreciate the offer but I wouldn't want us to keep you tied up for that long,” Jimmy said realizing that the man didn't know about his little girls.
“I take that to mean you have passengers with you, younger ones if I guess correctly based on the fact there's no one in the passenger seat. I don't mind extra people staying with us at the B&B we have a crowd permanently so a few more are always welcome. The names Dean by the way, Dean Winchester. I have my son Ben back there in the car,” Dean told the man hoping to get him to agree. He really didn't want to leave the man here in the middle of the off ramp with kids in the car.
“Thank you Dean, I have my daughters with me. If you really don't mind I would appreciate it, I'd prefer for the girls not to be out here all night,” he replied, “My name is Jimmy by the way.”
“Well Jimmy let's get the girls in with Ben and get whatever you need for the night. We'll lock up the car and get you guys in to town and settled. We can figure out the car in the morning,” Dean said smiling.
Jimmy smiled and moved around the car. He opened the back passenger door and smiled at his little girls who sat up eager to find out what was going on. He motioned for them to unbuckle and climb out and when they were standing next to him he moved to the trunk and opened it quickly. He pulled out a backpack and one of the duffle bags and turned to look at the man who had offered his help.
“I think we're ready, “he said to Dean before he crouched down in front of the girls, “Girls this is Dean, he and his son Ben are gonna help us get to town and help with the car tomorrow. I need you to be on your best behavior for me okay?”
“We will Papa,” the elder of the two said as the little one simply nodded her head
“Thank you Claire,” Jimmy said smiling before he stood up picking the youngest up, “ready to go Remi?”
The little girl nodded again as she was sucking on her thumb. Jimmy turned to Dean silently asking him what he wanted him to do next. Dean smiled at the man quickly filing the little girls names away so he would remember what to call them.
Dean led the man and the little girls to his car and quickly opened the back door. His impala had been in the family since his father was Dean's age and still the car was in amazing shape. Ben looked over when his dad opened the door.
“Hey bud, we are gonna give them a ride into town and their gonna stay with us for a night or so till I get a chance to look at the car. His daughters are gonna sit back here with you okay?” Dean explained to the boy who just smiled.
“Okay Dad,” Ben said smiling
First Jimmy put Remi into the back seat and got her buckled in before he stepped back and let Claire climb in. He made sure that his eldest had her belt on securely before stepping back and letting Dean close the door.
A minute later they were on their way toward town and the bed and breakfast that his roadside savior ran. Eden River wasn't that long of a drive from where they had broken down so it only took about ten minutes to reach the outskirts of the little city. Jimmy watched as they drove through and was surprised that they passed a set of blackened ruins of several buildings in a small area about a mile outside of the actually cities limits.
As they drove past Dean became quiet and checked on Ben in the back seat. Once they got into the cities limits he stayed on the same road for a few blocks before turning down a side street. He kept going for a few blocks before he stopped in front of a three story building at the end of a long driveway.
“Okay Ben go ahead and head in...find Sam and tell him that we need another room set up for the night. Room 3 should work well for them. Then go get changed for dinner,” Dean said as they all got out.
“Sure thing Dad,” Ben said heading for the front doors of the massive building.
Jimmy stood next to the car. He had the backpack and bag slung over his shoulder and Remi sitting on his hip and with his free hand had a hold of Claire's small hand. Dean motioned for them to follow him and headed up the stairs to head inside.
“Welcome to Winchester Lodge. I will introduce you to everyone at dinner but for now lets get you up to your room so you guys can rest for a bit,” he said as he guided them through the front door and then proceeded up the staircase.
He lead them to a door with a large 3 on it Dean opened the door and let Jimmy into the room. Jimmy set his things down and placed Remi on the bed before turning and helping Claire up onto the bed next to her sister. Jimmy wondered for a moment how many people were permanent guests of the bed and breakfast. Dean had made it sound like there were a few at the very least.
It was an hour or so later that a knock came at the door. Jimmy opened the door figuring that Dean would be on the other side but it turned out to be Ben. He smiled and asked them to follow him it was time for dinner. Ben led them down the stairs and into a room near the back of the building.
Jimmy stepped through the swinging door into a large room mostly dominated by a table. He found several open chairs one of which had a booster seat in it. He placed Remi in the booster seat and Claire sat next to her before Jimmy sank down into a seat next to them.
Dean smiled for a moment before he caught Jimmy's attention, “so Jimmy I'd like to introduce you to my brother Sam (he pointed to the man on the opposite side of the table who if standing would be really tall), our Uncle Bobby (he pointed out a gruff looking man wearing a baseball cap), and the boys Ben who you guys met, Lucas (a boy with shoulder length almost auburn hair), Michael (this one seemed to be the oldest of the boys and had dirty blond hair), Asher (he pointed to the youngest boy with light brown hair who was sitting next to Michael), and our only girl here at the moment Tyler (a little girl with dirty dishwater blond hair who sat next to Sam),” he went through all of them and Jimmy smiled at them all.
He was surprised to find that none of the boys looked similar to each other save for Michael and Asher. It was during dinner that he noticed something he had missed before. Dean had reached over to pass him one of the dishes on the table so that Claire could have some more when he saw it. Dean's arm was covered in a large scar, it seemed to Jimmy to be from something hot rather than anything else, perhaps the man had been injured in a fire.
Jimmy didn't mention it though not wanting to bring it up to the man if it was a bad memory. Jimmy also realized that not all of the kids were Dean's some of them had to be Sam's. Of course he figured that out when Tyler called Sam papa. He realized that the brothers must have come together to raise their kids. They seemed to be a close family from what he could see.
He returned to his room with his girls and got them ready for bed before getting ready himself. He nearly cried when Remi asked where he father was? Why he hadn't come with them. Jimmy smiled at her and told her sadly that he had to work so he couldn't be with them. She looked thoughtful for a moment before she smiled back and said goodnight.
Soon Remi had fallen into a deep sleep but he could not thinking about the man the girls called father. Nick had helped him move on after his beloved wife Amelia had died shortly after having Remi. Jimmy couldn't stay with him any longer though not after the last time Nick hit him...he wouldn't risk him hurting the girls.
Jimmy woke the next morning and decided to take a shower really fast before he got the girls up for breakfast. It gave him time to figure out what he was going to do next. When he left Nick's place he hadn't really planned anything out, he had just been heading in the general direction of the small town where his brother Gabriel lived. Jimmy didn't even remember the name of the town only that it was somewhere along this highway. He would need to call him and figure out how far away he was before going on.
Also he needed to figure out a way to thank Dean and his family for helping him. The man really had gone out of his way to help them and Jimmy appreciated it immensely. He stepped out of the shower and dried off. After finishing with his hair he turned and nearly fell over at his reflection staring back at him. Jimmy winced at the hand shaped bruise around his neck and the slight black and blue marks around his left eye.
Jimmy had forgotten that Nick had gotten him in the eye after...well he vividly remembered the cause of his bruised neck. He hoped that the others wouldn't mention it in front of the girls. Jimmy may tell them one day why he'd had to leave Nick but for now they didn't need to know maybe when they were older he would tell them.
After finishing in the bathroom he went to wake up Claire and Remi. He handed Claire her outfit for the day and then worked on getting Remi dressed for the day. He herded them downstairs after grabbing his cell phone off it's charging cord. He didn't know what he would find upon getting to the dining room but he knew he needed to get the girls fed at the very least before trying to call Gabriel.
He stepped into the room to find Dean, Sam, and Bobby sitting at the table with a woman who hadn't been there the previous night. Jimmy came further into the room when Dean motioned him in and Jimmy found once again a booster seat in a chair and two others open next to Dean. He got the girls seated and comfortable before he sat down in his own chair. Dean smiled at him for a moment before he got a worried look on his face...Jimmy realized he'd seen the marks on his neck. The shocked man seemed to want to say something to him about it but Jimmy just shock his head looking in the direction of the girls sitting next to him. Dean seemed to get the idea that he didn't want to discuss it in front of the girls.
Dean turned then to the girl sitting at the table and introduced her to them. The young woman seemed to be a bit younger than Sam maybe by a few years, “Jimmy I like to introduce to you Jo Harvelle our cousin for lack of a better title I guess. Jo this is Jimmy and his daughters Claire and Remi. They had a spot of trouble with their car last night.”
“Nice to meet you,” Jimmy said smiling at the woman who smiled back at them. Jo waived at Remi when the little girl waved at her.
“I figured after breakfast you and I could head out to grab your car and tow it back. The girls can come with us or they can stay here with Sam and play with the kids,” Dean told the man.
Jimmy looked over at the girls and asked which they'd prefer. They had never really had much chance to get to play with kids their own age other than at school.
“We can stay here papa,” Claire said smiling
“Okay sounds good to me,” Jimmy said, “before we head out though I have to try and get a hold of my older brother...I was headed for his place...well once I called him I was going to be heading there. I'm not quiet sure where he lives though.”
“Sure I have to grab the tow cables and pull the truck up front so that we are ready to go. It will take me a bit,” Dean told him knowing that Jimmy getting a hold of family was probably a good idea.

Jimmy stepped outside on to the front porch and pulled his cell phone out of his pocket. He was slightly anxious about calling his brother since he hadn't talked to Gabriel in over a year since right before Amelia died. He took a deep breath and hit the button to call him hoping that his number hadn't changed.
“Angel's Fall this is Balthazar speaking, we are currently closed what can I do for you?” a voice laced with a British accent said over the line after the third ring sounding bored.
“Oh I was trying to get in touch with Gabriel Novak, this is the number that he gave me,” Jimmy said wondering why his brother's number had led him here.
“Can I ask who's calling?” Balthazar said now sounding curious
“My name is Jimmy Novak Gabriel is my brother,” Jimmy told him, “I was hoping this number was still the right one...it's been a while since i've been able to call.”
“Yeah boss man is here let me go get him for you,” he said and Jimmy heard the phone being set down on a counter or something and footsteps leading away.
Jimmy waited for a few minutes just listening to the dead air and the sounds in the background of what sounded like chairs being moved around. He nearly jumped when he heard a crash on the other side of the line and could hear the cussing that stemmed from it.
It was only a minute or two after the crashing sound that he heard the phone being picked up and the voice from the other side made Jimmy smile.
“Cassie, my little brother, what has you calling out of the blue after such a long time?” Gabriel asked trying to sound jovial but a hint of sadness came through his tone making Jimmy sigh. He felt bad making his brother sad and kind of in annoyance at the use of the nickname. Unlike his brother's his middle name was angelic instead of his first name.
“I've wanted to call Gab but it's been a long year. I've left Nick's place, he...well he was getting violent and I didn't want him to turn it on he girls. I was hoping I could maybe crash with you for a little while until I can get myself together. I just wanted to see if it was okay...well and to find out the town you are living in...I know it's in Wisconsin but I can't remember the name of the town for some stupid reason?” Jimmy explained to his brother leaving out all the sticky details.
“I'll kill him...are you okay? You will come stay with me...I won't have it any other way Jimmy. Bring the girls and you can stay as long as you want. The town is called Eden River it's a small little town but the people are nice and I have a house next to my bar here so I have plenty of room,” Gabriel said his voice dripping with concern for Jimmy and the girls.
“Eden River? You have to be kidding me...I broke down outside Eden River last night. I actually spend the night here after a passerby helped me and the girls. He's actually about to help me get the car towed back here so it can hopefully get fixed,” Jimmy said nearly laughing at the irony of landing in the same town his brother lived in completely by chance.
“Seriously...who was it that helped you? I owe them for helping you and the girls,” Gabriel said
“His name is Dean Winchester he and his son Ben picked us up. They were very accommodating and very helpful,” Jimmy told his brother.
“Dean!! Well hell I know the whole family....well seeing as half of them work here,” Gabriel said, “have him bring you by later if he's willing or I will come out and see you guys tomorrow to tour the town since I have tomorrow off.”
He looked ahead then hoping to see a small town...anywhere he could turn off the road. Jimmy just needed a hotel where he and his daughters could rest for the night...and in the morning he could see about getting their car fixed. The car had been making funny noise's for a while now.
